Guide - How to make a moist hide
Please Note: This hide has been designed for Leopard Geckos, and is really only suitable for other small lizards that require a moist hide. For additional questions about the hide, or how one would be better made for a particular species, please feel free to enquire via our "Contact Us" page.
You will need;
- A food tub around (W10xL15xH5cm) - Supermarket
- Childrens Play Sand (No Glass)- Garden Centre
- Wood glue - DIY Stores
- Childrens Paint Brush - Stationary Store
- Vermiculite - Large pet Stores
- Marker pen- Stationary Store
Firstly find somewhere you can make the hides with a mess, because the sand gets almost everywhere!!!
Firstly you need to take your tub, and mark out on the front (as shown opposite) a hole thats 6x3CM, this will allow the gecko to easily enter and leave the hide.

Next you need to carefully cut out this hole using sharp scissors, we also used a dremel to round off the corners, making a nicer finish and helps prevent sharp edges. Remember to make sure the edges are smooth to avoid injury. |
| The next step is to apply a layer of wood glue (we found this worked better than PVA), try not to make this too thick or it will take ages to dry out. Make sure the entire hide is covered evenly with the glue, if the glue is hard to spread you may need to add a small amount of water to the mix. |
 |
 |
Next, take your glue covered hide and dip it in a tray of sand as shown, this fully coats it with sand. If bits don't stick, sprinkle sand on and press down then shake the excess off. Then place the hide somewhere to let the first layer dry fully before continueing. |
| For the lid, we recommend you leave it plain, this is becuase the sand will crack when removing the lid off the hide for cleaning etc. |
 |
 |
The next step is to repeat the previous one another 2 times to make the layer of sand thicker, and also making the hide darker inside. Make sure you let each layer fully dry before repeating. |
| Thats it, you have now made a new moist hide for your gecko! You just need to fill it with a substrate and moisten it! If you want something different, try using something else other than sand! |
